Champs d'études

Le créneau de recherche de Jeffrey s’insère dans le domaine de la science de l’information géographique. Il s’intéresse en particulier aux méthodes de traitement des données spatiales.

Jeffrey détient un PhD (2002) de University of Wisconsin-Madison. Avant d’amorcer un stage postdoctoral au GRIL en septembre 2005, il avait complété un premier stage postdoctoral (2005) au sein du groupe avec lequel il a œuvré au doctorat. Le créneau de recherche de Jeffrey s’insère dans le domaine de la science de l’information géographique. Il s’intéresse en particulier aux méthodes de traitement des données spatiales et ce, dans le but de représenter, comprendre et modéliser la dynamique des changements environnementaux. Dans ce contexte, Jeffrey a, entre autres, créé METALAND un outil disponible sur internet qui permet de quantifier et de représenter cartographiquement les patrons spatiaux des paysages naturels.

Patrons et processus à grande échelle spatiale dans les paysages
La disponibilité accrue des données spatiales et de logiciels analytiques ainsi que l’accroissement de la capacité de calcul des ordinateurs ont ouvert de toutes nouvelles opportunités pour la compréhension des phénomènes écologiques. Ainsi, peut-être pour la première fois dans l’histoire de l’humanité, nous avons maintenant la possibilité de visualiser, conceptualiser, et analyser les relations entre les processus écologiques et les patrons spatiaux à une gamme d’échelles spatiales, particulièrement l’échelle régionale. Ce contexte favorable et en forte émergence présente à la fois de nouvelles opportunités et de nouveaux défis pour les écologistes. Deux objectifs spécifiques du programme seront de (1) de créer, tester et mettre à l’essai un modèle simulant explicitement les processus écologiques actifs au sein de paysages québécois caractérisés par l’abondance de lacs et (2) de comprendre les connections entre les processus écologiques et les patrons spatiaux présents dans les écosystèmes forestiers du Québec. Ces travaux originaux visant à comprendre le caractère spatial explicite de questions écologiques de pointe s’inscrivent dans la mouvance des progrès récents réalisés par la communauté scientifique sur cette question.

Ses intérêts sont: Écologie paysage, modélisation des écosystèmes à l’échelle régionale, aménagement du territoire, changements climatiques, Systèmes d'Information Géographique (SIG), télédétection (remote sensing), fusion de données spatiales, patrons régionaux d’aménagement du territoire, changements environnementaux globaux, sciences de la terre.
