The Complex Systems Laboratory is a research facility in the Department of Geography at the
University of Montreal, dedicated to the modelling, simulation and analysis of coupled social-ecological
systems. Contact us.

Our goal...

The long-term objective of our research program is to advance scientific understanding of the dynamics of coupled social-ecological systems and, based on this new understanding, to propose better approaches to environmental management, restoration and protection.

We work at the scale of regional landscapes. We view landscapes as complex mosaics of interacting components, linked via processes occuring across multiple scales of space and time. We work in marine, coastal and terrestrial environments.

Applications of our research include understanding the impacts of human disturbance on ecological communities, development of new ecological indicators for ecosystem monitoring and the creation of decision support systems for the management of parks and protected areas. We work in close collaboration with non-academic partners from government and industry sectors.

Our research is founded in complex systems science and we work actively to advance the field of ecological complexity.

What is ecological complexity?

You are invited to peruse our Research page for more information on current research in the lab.
